Menarys was founded in 1923 by Cookstown Draper Joseph Alexander, the great-uncle of our current Managing Directors, Stephen and Philip McCammon. After buying over MenaryBrothers in Lisburn in the 1970’s, their father adopted the Menary’s name and all Alexander’s stores were rebranded.
Following rapid expansion in the 1980’s and 90’s, we launched our sister company Tempest in 2000 to provide a stronger fashion offering to our younger customers. Now we have 19 Menarys and Tempest stores, one Store Support Centre, more than 360 members of staff and over 200,000 Reward Me Loyalty Card holders.
Over the years our stores have become focal points in local communities both in the North and South of Ireland. Our identity as a local and independent retailer is so important to us and this characteristic permeates everything we do. We support our local communities in various ways including job creation, charity work and social development. We love providing a platform for local suppliers and we know our customers do too. Each Menarys store has developed its own personality shaped by both our staff and their local community and we hope those relationships continue for years to come.

As one of the country’s most well-known retailers, Menarys has become synonymous with a form of traditional customer service that has become such a rarity in the world of retail today. Our teams in each one of our Menarys branches have created a fantastic culture of friendliness and familiarity regardless of location. Our staff not only know our customer’s names, and vice versa, they have also become part of their lives. Almost 20% of our staff have been a member of the Menarys team for more than 15 years.
With more than 360 amazing staff who have made it possible to run 19 department stores we have big plans for the future. Our Personal Styling Service and Online Wedding Gift List Service are new additions to our already highly rated list of services. We also continue to listen to you, our customers, so we can provide the products that you want to see in all departments across all of our stores. And after a five year partnership with Action Cancer, during which time our teams and customers raised a massive £75,000, we will soon begin new associations with different charities both in the North and South of Ireland.
